Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for one permanent position of Tree Trimmer A (Arborist) with Road Operations and construction in Public Works. Under the general direction of the Works Supervisor or Senior Work Supervisor of Urban Forestry, this position is responsible for activities relating to the operational maintenance of municipally owned trees. Following best management practices for Arboriculture, this position performs various tasks including the pruning of mature trees either from a bucket truck or while climbing, the chipping of brush, the planting and pruning of young trees, as well as general vegetation management on Municipal property and other duties as assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prune a wide variety of species of varying age, size, condition and location and use knowledge of recognized methods in bolting, cabling, bracing; felling and removing trees;
- Adhere to safety regulations, reporting any workplace hazards, while working in proximity to energized power lines;
- Operation of arboriculture equipment and apparatus including but not limited to chain saws, brush chippers & aerial trucks/devices
- Work within the Limits of Approach as a “qualified person” (NS Power);
- Access trees using saddle and ropes and/or aerial lift;
- Perform an aerial rescue and bucket evacuation procedures;
- Participate in technical and skill upgrading programs as required;
- Use mechanical abilities in maintaining and performing minor repairs to equipment such as power drills, chain saws, etc;
- Will be required to work as part of the Winter Works program;
- Working outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions must be considered by interested candidates.
QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience
- Grade 12 or equivalent combination of training and experience;
- A Certificate, Degree or Diploma in Arboriculture, Forestry or Urban Forestry is considered an asset;
- Minimum two to four years directly related work experience in Urban Forestry;
- Meet requirements of a qualified Utility Tree Worker as recognized by NS Power and Dept. of Labour;
- Must have a valid NS Driver’s License (Minimum of Class 3 with airbrake endorsement or willing to obtain) and a good driving record. A current driver’s abstract is required;
- ISA Certified Arborist or eligibility qualifications.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of pertinent regulations; i.e., fall arrest and scaffolding regulations; The Forest Professional; Tree Trimmer Code of Practice and safe work practices around utility lines, structures and equipment;
- Acceptable work attendance and record;
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Ability to work as part of a team;
- Training/Certification in WHIMS, Traffic Control and Signage, Emergency First Aid CPR and/or willingness to obtain within a reasonable time frame.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full time
HOURS OF WORK: Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 3:00pm, however flexibility is required for Winter Works. Must be able to work overtime as required.
SALARY: $30.35 per hour, as per the CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement
