As a Forestry Leader, you will play a key role in the preservation, maintenance and growth of Edmonton’s Municipal Forest. You will be responsible to prepare the annual operational work plans for the Forestry Operations Planting portfolio and manage the labour, equipment, and materials used to deliver services.
What will you do?
- Supervise and mentor a team of Urban Foresters and Crew Leaders
- Develop and implement best practices related to the Urban Forestry Planting Program and implement improvements within the planting process
- Promote innovation within the portfolio
- Work closely with other Urban Forestry Leaders to provide an integrated leadership approach
- Work closely with the Supervisor of Forestry Operations to plan, deliver, and monitor monthly work plans, budgets, and variances
- Ensure that the operational work plan is implemented and monthly goals and targets are met
- Develop monitoring programs and quality control for the in-house replacement tree planting program and for contracted transplanting and planting work
- Oversee and direct the tree-watering program
- Assist with process improvements for routing and scheduling of the tree planting program
- Assist with meeting planting goals outlined in various City policies and initiatives, such as the Urban Forest Asset Management Plan and Greener As We Grow
- Assist in the evaluation of contracts and provide input on recommendations for improvements
- Enforce and ensure compliance with safety programs
- Ensure that staff receive and complete all required training and provide recommendations and input for the training program
- Work closely with a team of Urban Forestry leaders to ensure consistency and cohesion between all service lines and the overall Urban Forestry program
- Provide technical assistance and guidance as required to ensure adherence to best practices in Urban Forestry
- Respond to inquiries from the public, administration, and Council in regard to the business area
- Other related duties as required
Qualifications:
- Completion of a two-year Technical Diploma in Urban Forestry, Landscaping or a related field, OR completion of Journeyperson Landscape Horticulturist certification
- Minimum of 5 years experience in Arboriculture with a minimum of 2 years supervising staff
- ISA Certified Arborist
Skills required for success:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills
- Knowledge of City policies, procedures and bylaws, legislations, and the collective agreements between the City of Edmonton and CUPE 30 and CSU 52
- Demonstrated experience with optimization and process improvement
- Demonstrated computer skills including Word, Excel, Google Docs, Gmail and SAP
- Familiar with ANSI Standards and Arboriculture Best Management Practices
- Strong Customer Service Skills

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- You must arrange your own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position, such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
Salary Range: $44.572 - $56.014 (Hourly); $93,066.340 - $116,957.230 (Annually)
