Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal University’s Facilities Management department is responsible for the planning, development, construction, design, operation, maintenance, safety, security and stewardship of all the buildings, infrastructure, sites and services within Mount Royal's campus community. Through efficient and environmentally sustainable operation, we offer grounds, custodial, building operations, facilities planning, security services and engineering professional services to provide a physical environment that supports and enhances our academic space for students and staff. Reporting to the Turf and Sports Field Specialist, this full-time position performs skilled work requiring specialized knowledge and training in all aspects of grounds maintenance such as horticulture, equipment operation, irrigation repairs and maintenance of hard landscape features.
- Remove snow and ice from pedestrian, vehicular routes and parking lots using sand, gravel and de-icer by hand or machine
- Running equipment to remove snow such as Ventrac, Kubota tractor L2610 or Husqvarna P525
- Snow fence installation and dismantling
- Maintain a healthy growth of all plants and materials by removing unwanted competitive plants, fertilizing, watering, and under the supervision of a licensed applicator, may be required to spray pesticides when necessary
- Bring to the attention of the Manager, any horticultural problems and recommend solutions to control and minimize future problems
- Assist in designing plans and planting trees, bulbs, perennial beds and shrubs
- Maintenance of all turf grass areas to a uniform color and height, regularly operating a riding mower
- Performs a full range of tree and shrub surgery duties for the purpose of shaping, training, and promoting healthy growth appearance
- Assists in the fall, major leaf removal from all property
- Assists (when needed) with irrigation repairs and/or start up and blow out of irrigation system
- Operates tractors and other riding, hand-held, and push-type equipment for grounds maintenance in summer and winter
- Removes garbage and sweep entrances on a daily basis
- Provide guidance and direction to seasonal or casual staff when needed
- Perform other related duties assigned by the Grounds Manager, such as planning of site development or expansion of landscape projects
- Two year diploma from a university or equivalent or Journeyman ticket.
- Minimum 2 to 3 years of previous related experience.
- Ability to foresee future needs and issues and use common sense to deal with them.
- Horticultural experience and knowledge of equipment operation.
- Experience with installation of “hard” landscape and pruning.
- Pesticide Applicators License a definite asset.
- Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license, with an excellent driving record.
- Mechanical aptitude and proven ability to operate large and small vehicles and equipment.
- Awareness of safety regulations, requirements and a demonstrated ability to work safely.

Salary: $45,992 - $58,244 per annum
