Position Summary

Reporting to the Foreman, Park Services, the Operator III - Arborist performs a wide variety of work functions within Parks Services under the Public Works Department. The position uses safe work practices and procedures to carry out assigned tasks and contributes to the overall effectiveness of the work team.

Responsibilities

include, but are not limited to:

Urban Forestry program maintenance and operations. This includes tree pruning operations (ground, aerial and climbing), tree planting, hazardous tree removal, and response to storm damage using equipment such as aerial lifts, wood chippers, chainsaws and pole saws.
Assist Foreman with planning and taking a lead position in the Arboriculture program. This includes coordination of First calls for tree plantings, selection of species, ensuring Tree asset management program is updated and maintained, perform tracking and record keeping for maintaining overall City pruning schedules.
Operation of light, medium and heavy-duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner used in the maintenance of trees and shrubs.
Perform preventative maintenance and repair duties on parks amenities and equipment.
Cemetery interments, including the opening and closing of graves, cremations and the columbarium as well as assist with marking of graves prior to excavations. An understanding of Cemetery By-laws is required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Class 5 Alberta Driver’s license with air brake endorsement and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in arboriculture and in the safe operation of light to heavy equipment in the Parks Arboriculture field. An ISA Arborist Certification is required. An ISA Tree Worker Climbing Specialist certification and Pesticide Applicator or Apprentice License are considered assets. This position requires general knowledge of industry practices used in areas of Arboriculture, Horticulture, and Integrated Rest Management. Knowledge of snow removal operations and performing of Cemetery tasks is desired. This is a physically demanding position; the successful candidate will be required to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions.

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. The successful candidate will be required to provide a current Driver’s Abstract at time of interview.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Evening and weekend work is common and frequent.
